Gorilla Glue Goes Green!

Wandering around the blogosphere yesterday I stumbled upon a fun contest sponsored by www.instructables.com and Gorilla Glue.

The deal is - you create something cool, using mostly cardboard, and post the how-to up on the instructables web site. Winning entries get a bunch of free Gorilla Glue products and a highly coveted (by geeks anyway) Instructables t-shirt. I put on my thinking cap and came up with a simple but clever product for the contest:

Eco-Friendly Emergency Flip Flops - More DIY How To Projects

Get over to Instructables and check out the other cardboard and non-cardboard projects. There are some seriously clever people out there!

What's your target market?

Are you one of those creative people who makes crazy things and sells them on ETSY or Artfire? Always trying to figure out what your target market is? Who wants my stuff? How do I find them?

This morning I got a message from a fellow blogger and Etsyian and those questions were answered!

It looks like my products are very attractive to 4 year olds - who knew? I'll add them to my already huge customer base made up of adults who refuse to grow up! When I re-open my ETSY shop in September I'll have to make sure my new products give the little ones a laugh as well!

Get over to Burnt Mill Candles and Soap to read the blog post and be sure to check out her amazing ETSY shop here: BurntMill on ETSY. I'm in LOVE with these shea butter bath bombs!

Want to browse my shop archives yourself and see what I've made in the past? Follow this link: Nothinglikeit on ETSY. Send me a message if there is something you really like and I'll add that to my list of things to make first! See you in September!

Another Toy Story

Meet Sally. She's a rag doll who thinks she's a real girl. Lots of illustration ideas still in my head for this character. It's a fun project so I'll keep at it until I get bored.
The Tea Party is my favorite so far. Which one is your favorite?

Now THAT was a STORM!

We live on the panhandle of Florida, midway between Pensacola and Panama City. Every year, starting in late May / early June, the local news stations start the 'Hurricane Hype". They throw up maps of the Caribbean and Gulf and point to tiny spots that need to be "watched" for hurricane development. Because of this constant weather noise, we have learned to treat the weather forecasters like the screaming voices on an infomercial.

Now we're on our sailboat sitting in a marina in Gloucester, Virginia. We are slowly learning that the TV weather guys deserve our FULL
attention.

Our boat, with it's sun cover and tarp forward.

Yesterday, the TV weather guys started early - "Due to high temperatures and an approaching storm system, thunderstorms are expected to be strong this afternoon."
I'm pretty sure we heard that but later in the day it was reinforced by a "Strong Thunderstorm Warning". Not feeling any rain and seeing a lot of blue sky we thought little of it and settled down to relax for the afternoon. Minutes later we heard thunder and looked out to see a black sky in the distance, full of lighting.

We quickly shut down and unplugged the computer, turned off the TV and disconnected the antennas that are on top of the 76 foot tall mast. Then the storm was on us. Someone clocked the winds at 56 knots (that's 64 mph) and all of the boats were dancing in their berths. Some were gracefully pulling on their lines, others boats slammed less gracefully against the dock. We looked up from our cockpit to see
THROUGH our sun canopy - it was coming apart in the strong wind. When the storm had finally passed we went out to survey the damage and clean up. Our sun cover and tarp were both gone, shredded to pieces. We spent the next hour cutting away what was left.

We really can't complain, the tarp was cheap and the canvas sun cover was 15 years old. It had served us well but we were already pretty sure it was finished after this season. Other boats were not so lucky. This guy did not put away his roller-furling jib very well and he's obviously paid the price. OUCH!

Illustration Friday - IDLE

IDLE Illustration Friday

Dreaming of tomorrow's adventures
my bike sits idle through the night...
© Robin Wiesneth - 2009

This image popped into my head as soon as I read the Illustration Friday topic. The acrylic painting was based on a photograph of a lonely bike parked on the street at night. It made me wish the old bike could talk - telling me stories of it's many adventures.

Building a Simple Art Gallery in Blogger

I've been wanting to try this for ages so I spent a few hours tonight trying to sort out a page design. Here are some things I tried that might help you accomplish the same type of design.
  • I built the Gallery in a separate blog and stripped out all of the posting elements to give the page a cleaner look.
  • I then created a left justified, 3 column table inside the blog post to contain the thumbnail images of the art I wanted to display. I used image links from my FLICKR library.
  • I wanted to make a gallery that would allow a visitor to zoom in on any image for a closer look without leaving the page so I used a cool CSS trick I found here. The page looks a little lop-sided at first but as soon as your mouse hovers over a thumbnail the page fills with an image.
  • I had to tweak the code slightly to get the larger pop-up image to dynamically position itself to the right of the thumbnails. This was done with a left: 45% command instead of an absolute position like left: 400px.
  • Finally, I used a few of the "Useful Blog Tools" on my sidebar to dress things up: Image Reflection and Menu Builder.
I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. Click on this Gallery Link to view the page. You can also get to it from my Quick Launch Menu at the top right of this blog.

My next update for this gallery blog will be to put [Next] and [Back] buttons on the bottom of the post so I can add pages with more thumbnail images. I'd also like to add direct links to product pages in my ArtFire store!

Please leave comments/feedback so I can improve the design even more!

A Blonde Joke

A blonde walked into a gas station and said to the manager, ”I locked my keys in my car. Do you have a coat hanger or something I can stick through the window to unlock the door?”

”Why sure,” said the manager, ”we have something that works especially well for that.”

A couple minutes later, the manager walked outside to see how the blonde was doing and he heard another voice.

”No, no! A little to the left,” said the other blonde inside the car.

Now for the Brunette version...

Like most people, I own at least one 110V adapter for my phone but when needed, it's nowhere to be found. My 12V charger works fine most of the time - drive around, charge the phone, you get the picture. I learned some time ago that my car ignition must be ON to enable the 12V plug.

So, I'm visiting my best friend.
My car is parked in her driveway.
Last night the battery died on my cell phone.

I put my brain to work on how I might charge my phone without leaving my car vulnerable to a car thief. I had a key and a remote. I quickly deduced that if I put the key in the ignition and turn the switch on, I could safely charge the phone and still get back in with my remote.

I started the phone charging and closed the car doors. I pressed the LOCK button on the remote and nothing happened. OK, I know. You're all one step ahead of me already - "If the remote will not LOCK the car with the key in the ignition, how can you expect it to UNLOCK the car while in the same state?"

Here's where I got too clever for my own good. I walked around the car and manually pressed all of the lock buttons, holding up the car handle on the last door to make sure the lock stayed down. Smiling and quite proud of myself I went inside.

At 10pm (2 hours later) I headed outside to turn off the car and get my phone. To my surprise, the remote did NOTHING. The little red light came on but nothing happened. This is when I began to realize that my car is smarter than I am. Had I read the manual for my Acura I might have discovered that it has a number of "anti-theft" features. This was one of them.

I panicked. It was 10pm and my battery would be dead in the morning if I didn't do something. I then accessed one of my car's "stupid driver" features - the 1-800 ACURA roadside service I signed up for when I bought my car.

The nice locksmith was there in 35 minutes with a tool. It took him 2 minutes to open my door. My best friend, a blonde, asked the guy "Who do you think locked the keys in the car, the blonde or the brunette (me)?"

He replied "The brunette - I get far more calls from brunettes than I do from blondes."

No! that can't be right! There must be a reason for all of those blonde jokes, right? Then I remembered that blonde hair only makes up about 2% of the US population (10% if you count dye jobs). If more than 10% of the calls come from blondes, my blonde joke logic would still work. Unfortunately, I thought about this AFTER the locksmith was gone.

Also statistically speaking, I'm not alone. People have blogged about locking keys in their car 6,381 times in the past month alone.

Make that 6,382...

Dealing with a dead MAC

This post should actually be titled - "Discovering an amazingly complicated but incredibly fun project with a very clever, almost 13 year old friend." Unfortunately, that would not fit in the space above...

Where to begin...
The iMac was dead. It had a good life. A hand-me-down computer that had served us all
faithfully, it was now kaput.

What do you do with old computers like this? We could lie and say it was in fine working order and give it to a charity. We could donate it 'as-is' and hope it finds a new job as a door stop in some senior citizen rest home. Neither seemed fitting.
We chose a more selfish end for this fine little MAC -
we took it apart! Not just to say we did it but we hoped to give it a new life as something else...

We had been in a thrift shop earlier in the week and had seen a hand made clock we liked a lot. It had fruit around the clock dial and looked a little Victorian - Elise said, "Wouldn't it be fun to make a 21st century version..." That became the idea for our new project. We found a battery operated wall clock and got to work.

Now the original mother board from the iMac is a really cool clock! Amazingly enough, it keeps good time!

We still have the outside plastic case (minus the CRT (picture tube). If we can find the right size glass container, we'll be building a very cool fish tank, stay tuned!

Life, The Universe and Everything

Surfing around the blog world the other day I found this Astronomy "picture of the day"

My first thought was - "Someone really messed up this time. They must have posted a corrupt jpg image and linked to it without checking." I followed the image link to see if the REAL picture was out there somewhere. To my surprise I discovered this image is actually a message beamed out into space to be read and understood by alien lifeforms. I hope the aliens get it because I hadn't a clue what it said.
I read further and discovered this code is actually symbols based on mathematics and these code pages tells us (and them) everything from the largest known prime number to the mass of a hydrogen atom. follow this link to read more about it.

Alien ships - animated

Looks like Douglas Adams might be right after all. The secret to life, the universe and everything just might be the number 42 after all...

Tough Love and Techy Stuff

Get out of the house you lazy teenagers!

Charles took this great picture of the Osprey nest near the marina and I really wanted to post a nice looking version of it on my blog page. How about rounded corners and a drop reflection?

Now you're saying "Oh no! That's hours in Photoshop and I'm just not that good!" Have no fear - this image was produced in about 15 minutes with two very cool online tools! Here's how we do it:

Step 1: Find a photograph worthy of all this attention. This is the hardest step.

Step 2: Find the section on my sidebar that says "Useful blog tools" and click on Rounded Corners (or use the link <- here). Select an image (JPEG/JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG) from your local drive or the internet. Click on the (Round It!) button.
You'll get a preview on the next screen with options you can change.

Most settings are fine left 'as is'. You can increase the roundness with the slider and change the knock-out color for your rounded corners. This one is worth looking at - the default color is white (FFFFFF) and this will work if your blog background is white. Mine is black so I changed the code to black (000000). You can also set the knock-out to transparent by clicking in the check box (your downloaded file will have a PNG extension).
You can change the filename before you click (download) but be sure not to use any spaces to name the file. Example use "my_house" NOT "my house". This appears to
be a small bug which may get fixed later.
The new rounded file will now be sitting wherever your downloads normally go. Open it in your photo editor to see the rounded corners.

Step 3: Go to the Reflection Maker page (<- here or in my sidebar to the right).

Grab your newly rounded image with the (Browse) button. You can change the amount of drop down reflection here, 100 would be a full mirror image, the default is 50%. The Osprey photo setting was about 60%. The background color setting here is a little more important because there is no transparency option. Here the background color should match the background color of your blog page.

* Slightly technical tidbit here - If you want the exact color code for your blog's background color, open your blog's layout editor and click on "Edit HTML". Look for this text (or similar):
Variable name="bgcolor" description="Page Background Color"
type="color" default="#000" value="#000000"
Your color code is the 6 digit figure after value="#
You can see other hex color codes here.

Once you have your background color set, click (generate) and then (download) your image. The new downloaded image will be named "reflection maker.jpg"

You're all done! Throw your new image up on your blog and be proud!

Disclaimer: There may be a few bugs in both web utilities that I cannot fix or foresee. This exercise will not damage your original photo but may cause you to waste valuable time that might be otherwise be applied to something much more productive.

Odds and Ends the Week

Mom had a funny blog post Saturday about a pork marinade recipe and cat farts. I found this wonderful coleslaw recipe that would be really good with it (the pork recipe, not the cat farts):

Apple Bacon Coleslaw recipe
Over at the blog called Fireflies and Jellybeans

I love everything about AuntieDi's ETSY shop - her candles are dreamy and her jewelry is divine. I have to say the pieces I drool over the most are her clever lampwork rings. She finds 'one of a kind' lampwork beads and fashions them into the cutest rings. I bought this one earlier this year.

And now I REALLY want this one:

Get over to AuntieDi's shop and check out her other wonderful items, just don't buy that ring!

Just in time to tickle my twisted sense of humor, I've discovered this clever ETSY Artist. Check out this print:

Too clever I'd say! Here's another one - Astaireing Contest - can you guess? Three cheers for Etsian artist Kate Gabrielle!

I'm also happy to discover I'm not the only person who plays with her food - check out this kiwi fruit.

I did another watercolor last night. A composite of a barn photo and a pasture image. Check it out over on FLICKR.

Finally, today I start chapter one of what's sure to be one of the greatest books ever written. My friend Elise and I are going to co-author a story; trading off a chapter at a time. Now how to begin - "It was a dark and stormy night..."

That's all for now. Have a great Sunday...

Panda-monium

The other night I started drawing panda bears and could not stop myself. The first panda looked so funny just standing there I thought, "He'd look even funnier dancing, riding a skateboard, hanging out on the playground, and riding a unicycle." LOL! Was I right?

With this blog post I also learned how to insert a table. This is useful for posting images without taking a lot of space on the page. I'm still experimenting with this bit of HTML code but so far I like it. I just wish I could figure out how to get rid of that extra space before the table! Any coders out there? LOL!

Moms Got a Brand New Blog!

My Mom has a million great ideas. She's always telling me about a wonderful recipe I should try or about some strange trivia she found on the internet. I told her she really should start her own blog. It would be a fun way to connect with other bloggers and share ideas and inspiration. She said she might.

Time passed, nothing happened.

Yesterday I got an email "Check out my new blog!" Suddenly that idea I gave her started sounding a little scary. My Mom out in the Blogosphere. Telling stories about the crazy things that happen in Jasper GA, sharing all of her crafting adventures, telling funny stories about her kids when they were little. You see where this is heading don't you?

Yep, Mom has a scanner and she has a blog. Will she resist the temptation to tell those hilarious stories about my brother and I (complete with photos)? To
o soon to tell. If you read this Mom, please don't post the picture of me running naked to the refrigerator...

Please visit Mom's blog and say hi. Encourage her to write about her craft work, cooking, her battle with Georgia Power, UFO sightings... Anything but me!

Traveling Between Dimensions

OK, that sounds like some cool new Sci-Fi mini-series. It's not. It's only describes me at the moment and my how my interest in art moves from sculpture to illustration and back again. While I'm away from home on the boat, sculpting and creating funny polymer characters can be a challenge. Lack of a workspace, a safe place to store unfinished work, an available oven, etc.... You get the idea.
Lately I've been drawing and painting; working hard to improv
e those skills. My old blog design didn't really work well for the new material I've been posting so I decided to give it a much needed face lift.

Now when I create things like this:

Or this:

They'll all feel right at home on my blog...

I've also added a third column, removed a lot of older widgets that were unneeded, added a few cool ones (like linkwithin) and made the page design stretchy to fill your screen better, regardless of resolution. Let me know what you think of my new design, I'm loving the change so far and always looking to improve!

Everyone Should Have A Best Friend

Someone to lean on
Someone to love
With arms wide open
You offer a hug
Someone to cry with
Laugh with and smile
Someone to make
Every moment worthwhile
When times get rough
And my world falls apart
You´re someone I run to
You offer your heart
From tearful shoulders
To stomach aching laughs
You´re someone I need
That's Something everyone should have
You´re the person who always
Shows me the brighter side
And I can always tell you
What I feel inside
Someone to be thankful for
Someone to never forget
You´re someone special I´ll always love
Are we BFFs? You bet!

Busy Boat Week

Aside from my Illustration Friday drawing I have not picked up a pencil or paint brush all week. We spent a lot of time taking advantage of sunshine and low humidity and managed to get the first coat of our finishing paint on the boat's super structure. After grinding, sanding, and countless applications of filler, we finally made it from this:

To this:

I have to admit that Charles has done most of the nasty work, I only helped out with the taping and the application of the final coat. Now we have to tape one more time and apply one more coat of the shiny paint. A few spots will need a third coat but only in high traffic areas.

We also installed the steps that I re-varnished in Atlanta. After sliding them into place and locking them down, we applied some no-skid tape to the edges and now they're good as new!
